KCA appoints Naomi Gichungu as Regional Chair for Manitoba
Friday, April 9, 2021 – Toronto, Ontario.
Kenyan Canadian Association - KCA, a Kenyan-led federal not-for-profit based in the Greater Toronto Area that implements programs that focus on the black community and other marginalized groups in Canada has appointed Ms. Naomi Gichungu as the Manitoba Regional Chair.
She who moved to Canada seven years ago from Kenya. She feels honoured to have been welcomed in Winnipeg and acknowledges that she is a visitor on Treaty 1.
She holds a Masters in Development Practice from University of Winnipeg and Bachelor of Science in Environmental Education from Kenyatta University.
Some of her academic achievements include an Award through the Winnipeg Foundation Emerging Leaders fellow grant to develop the First Nations History Simulation for newcomers to Canada.
She is fluent in both English and French, currently taking French studies in Advanced 2 class at Université de Saint-Boniface. Since moving to Canada, she has been an active member in the community through volunteering with newcomers and refugees. She has taught English, assisted youth with homework, coordinated community gardens and facilitated learning between newcomer and Indigenous families. She is passionate about supporting newcomer families to integrate and thrive in the Canadian society.
The Kenyan community and newcomers in general were disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. The social and economic impacts will be felt beyond this pandemic. Her inspiration to serve newcomers emanates from the appreciation of the existing challenges and systemic barriers.
As a member of the Council, she is looking forward to working with the team and communities KCA serves, to innovate and co-create strength-based programs that support newcomers.
KCA has 18 regions across Canada and implements various programs including newcomers & settlement; social economic empowerment; youth outreach; sports & recreation; research, education & careers; seniors outreach; and health.

MANITOBA REGIONAL CHAIR

Position Summary:
The Regional Chair will report directly to the KCA President. The Regional Chair will work closely with the Secretariat and Program Directors. Will oversee of all KCA activities in the region.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Closely work with other Council members to formulate ideas and work plans then implement those transformative plans in the region
- Act as the grassroot liaison for the program activities and projects in the region Coordinate KCA events and projects in the region in collaboration with project teams and program committees.
- Proactively represent KCA at official functions, events and meetings with Cities officials, political leaders and stakeholders in the region
- Where applicable, organize flag-raising, commemoration and proclamation functions in collaboration with city protocol offices
- Addresses regional issues in timely manner by working with the Secretariat and KCA Program teams
- Facilitates good working relationship with municipalities, political & community leaders as well as other strategic partners in the region
- Submit periodic reports to the Secretariat through the President – ad hoc, quarterly, half-year and annual
- Undertake other Regional activities and initiatives in consultation with the President.
