Seniors Feted at a Colorful Event Organized by Kenyan Canadian Association - KCA
Toronto, Canada – September 18, 2022
Kenyan Canadian Association - KCA held the second edition of Seniors Day & Workshop on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Istar Banquet Hall 235 Dixon Road, Toronto ON M9P 2M5
The event featured the Senior of the Year Award ceremony to honour seniors and older adults, 55 years and above, that have made outstanding voluntary contribution enriching the social, economic and cultural life in the community. The recipients of the award were those who had committed to serve without personal or financial gain.
In 2022, five seniors were awarded in five categories; Raphael Fernandes who is the KCA Board Chair/Sports & Recreation and former Kenyan Olympian for Humanitarian & Community Service Award; Jesse Kiome for Volunteer of the Year Award; Beatrice Muigai for Most Outstanding Newcomer Award; Rose Peter for Art, Culture & Music Preservation Award; and Rev. Susan Karanja for Spiritual Leadership Award.
The event also featured as a workshop for seniors on COVID-19 Recovery & Resilience. The seniors participated in two workshop sessions: Mental Health & Wellness facilitated by Dr. Florence Juma PhD as well as Digital Literacy & Cyber Security Awareness facilitated by Ephraim Mwaura.
KCA officials at the event included Ephraim Mwaura – President & Executive Director, Catherine Matimu – Board Secretary/ Newcomers & Settlement Program Director, Terry Ortlieb – Seniors Outreach Program Director and Jackie Kariuki - incoming Women & Genders Affairs Program Director.
In his speech, KCA President emphasized the important contribution that seniors make to their families, communities and the country. He encouraged seniors to take a more active role in community leadership and assured them that KCA will avail volunteer and job opportunities to them.
2022 KCA Seniors Day & Workshop was planned and implemented through generous funding and support of Network for Advancement of Black Communities (NABC), Canadian Women’s Foundation and Taibu Community Health Centre through Black Resilience Cluster (Confronting Anti-Black Racism Unit, City of Toronto).
