Kenyan Canadian Association - KCA is a federal not-for-profit organization that seeks to address the issues affecting marginalized black Canadians and other racialized groups while assisting newcomers to settle and make a positive contribution in the society as they endeavor to achieve their goals.

KCA also focuses on implementing programs and specifically offering services to newcomers, low-income families and other socially-excluded groups residing in Canada to improve their personal well-being and social-economic status.

KCA works collaboratively with organizations and stakeholders through our grassroot network across the country.

 

KCA Appoints Kombii Nanjalah as British Columbia Regional Chair

Saturday, January 8, 2022 – Toronto, Ontario.

Kenyan Canadian Association - KCA, a federal not-for-profit that implements programs that focus on the racialized and other marginalized groups has appointed Ms. Kombii Nanjalah as the British Columbia Regional Chair.

Based in Vancouver BC, she is an elder and a community leader, having worked in the community since she arrived in Canada in 2006 to date. She seats on different boards in Vancouver, Surrey and Vancouver Island as well as in Continental of Africa (Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda)

She brings her experience as a community servant with the need to learn from others who are already offering their expertise in the organization.

KCA Appoints Sanjit Kaur as Ottawa Regional Chair and Head of Council

Saturday, January 8, 2022 – Toronto, Ontario.

Kenyan Canadian Association - KCA, a federal not-for-profit that implements programs that focus on the racialized and other marginalized groups has appointed Ms. Sanjit Kaur as the Ottawa Regional Chair. She will also serve as Head of Council of Regional Chairs.

The Head of Council reports directly to the President and is tasked with presenting periodic reports to the Board of Directors from KCA Regional Chairs across the country.
Sanjit joined KCA on April 4, 2020 as Women and Gender Affairs Program Director has been very instrumental in the tremendous growth of the program since inception.

Sanjit is an experienced Entrepreneur with a demonstrated history of working in various industries from Travel & Tours, QM Auditing Processes, Education, Franchising and Direct Selling Industry.

KCA Webinar Uplifts UN Women HeForShe and Breaks Down Gender Stereotypes

Toronto, Canada – Tuesday, November 9 2021

On Saturday November 6, 2021, the Kenyan Canadian Association (KCA) hosted its fifth and final webinar in their high-impact series addressing gender inequality and gender-based violence: Gender Equality and UN Women’s HeForShe. This webinar series has been supported by funding from the Government of Canada through the Canadian Women’s Foundation, Safer + Stronger COVID-19 Emergency Grants.

KCA, a proud champion of the UN Women’s HeForShe initiative, hosted an interactive webinar featuring keynote panelist, UN Women’s Global Head of HeForShe, Edward Wageni, a long-time advocate for the social and economic empowerment of women and girls around the world.

Reimagining Africa: Empowering Cultural Narratives and Identity

Mosopefoluwa shares her initiative during the workshop on February 3, 2024.  

Recognizing the importance of preserving cultural heritage, Mosope advocates for Africans to embrace indigenous languages, strengthening ties to ancestral roots and promoting diverse cultures. Mosope's project, "Reimagining Africa," aims to showcase the continent's cultural heritage through a multimedia campaign, fostering global appreciation and understanding. 

 

Hoops for Empowerment: Malko Young's Basketball Initiative with Micro-Grant Youth Program

Malko Young shares his initiative during a workshop on February 3, 2024.

Dedicated to youth empowerment through basketball, Malko's "Improved Basketball Skills" program enhances participants' abilities in dribbling, shooting, and teamwork. By fostering physical fitness and leadership, Malko's holistic approach emphasizes character development, life skills, and mentorship, promoting confidence, academic success, and community engagement.

 

Empowering Black Students: Akera Otto’s STEM Access Initiative with Micro-Grant Youth Program

Akera Otto outlines his vision during a workshop on February 3, 2024.

Inspired by a Black student Hackathon he attended; Akera aims to transform their Python 3 program into a user-friendly app. With the grant, they plan to refine the code and hire a computer scientist by November. By January, beta testing will commence at McMaster University. Akera's project aims to empower Black students in STEM, providing vital resources and opportunities.

 

Cultivating Cultural Connections: Odilia's Community Engagement initiative

Odilia Nkosi shares her vision during the workshop on February 3, 2024.

Inspired by her heritage, Odilia plans to use the grant to organize cultural events like music performances and language classes, as well as a community roller skating night. These initiatives aim to promote cultural preservation and community engagement.

 

 

Empowering Sustainable Fashion: Melody's Clothing Swap Initiative with Micro-Grant Youth Program

Melody Vuliye shares her initiative during a workshop on February 3, 2024.

Melody’s project, "The Clothing Swap Initiative," focuses on hosting three clothing swap events across GTA colleges and universities. These events aim to promote sustainable fashion practices and reduce textile waste in the communities. By providing students with a platform to exchange clothing items, Melody and team foster conscious consumption and community engagement.

The goal is to empower youth with affordable, high-quality clothing options while advocating for sustainability and the circular economy. Through breaking financial barriers and encouraging clothing reuse and recycling, they aim to create a sense of community and inspire a greener future.

KCA PARTICIPATES AT THE METIPSO PORTAL INTERNATIONAL AND OCAD UNIVERSITY EXHIBITION Kenyan Canadian Association graced the 12-hour LIVE and interactive Nuit Blanche 2024 – BRIDGING DISTANCE event is a co-presentation with OCAD U’s Onsite Gallery and The Metipso Portal International. The very well-attended event was held on October 5, 2024 from 7pm at OCAD University, 100 McCaul St., Main Auditorium. KCA volunteers supported the event in various activities. Speaking at the event KCA President Ephraim Mwaura highlighted the need for closer partnership between Canada and Kenya in cultural exchange programs. He also thanked Canadians for their support in the production and promotion of the highly successful and award winning film 'KIPKEMBOI'. The movie was inspired and produced at Metipso Portal in Metipso, Eldama Ravine in Kenya. You can view Kipkemboi Film trailer at https://youtu.be/c0I9WVpHIFc?si=fCO... The exciting, multi-faceted exhibit linked Toronto to The Metipso Portal International Mud Hut Media Lab for the Live Broadcast Experiment: #NB-OCAD-10-05-24. The Metipso Portal International is the world's only experimental media lab that operates in a traditional mud hut in a village located on the edge of a protected forest in the highlands of Central Kenya. Artwork presented throughout the night was Metipso Portal’s most ambitious presentation yet! The all-night program included a compilation of archival footage showcasing past connections between the Metipso Portal and people worldwide played on the central screen. To the side of the screen, the event participants discovered a Live Zoom call where they met and interacted with a member from Metipso village. This intimate call ran for the full 12 hours. Hosted by an array of the ActionCan Films who’s who, including Benjamin Blais, John Fleming and newcomer Arleigh Curran from Toronto along with Metipso TV team in Kenya, including Teddy Purity, KAIDA, Javan Batenga and renowned international presenter Topi Lyambila. Visitors experienced live interactions between the bi-continental hosts, audience members, fun games as well as talented performances from both sides including Cellist Margaret Maria, Traditional Village Singers and Cocanina. This unique exhibit has been orchestrated by lead Canadian artists Joel Richardson and Susan de Freitas and Kenyan Olympic Gold medallist Matthew Birir. Kenyan Canadian guitar maestro and Juno Award Winner Adam "The Professor" Solomon performing "Jambo Bwana" (in Swahili "Hello Sir"), a Kenyan popular pop song at Oakville Festivals of Film and Art during the premiere of "Kipkemboi". The song was first released in 1982 by Kenyan band Them Mushrooms. The Kipkemboi movie will premiere in Toronto on June 22, 2024 5:00pm at The Royal Cinema.

KCA IN COLLABORATION WITH UZIMA WOMEN INTERNATIONAL WRAPS UP MICRO-GRANT PROGRAM AS YOUTH SHOWCASE THEIR PROJECTS AT A CLOSING DINNER Meet Mariana Muhumuza a beneficiary of the 2023-2024 Micro-Grant. She is charge of the Black Youth Safe Space. Her aim was to create a safe space for black youths in high school and middle school. She is grateful for the opportunity to have received the youth grant funded by the Canada Service Corps that enabled her to create this space and was able to establish a core group. During the final workshop and dinner on March 28, 2024, she expressed that she would be delighted to be part of the next program. The Program, which funded 100 youth with $5,000 each, was facilitated by Uzima Women International and Kenyan Canadian Association. KCA IN COLLABORATION WITH UZIMA WOMEN INTERNATIONAL WRAPS UP MICRO-GRANT PROGRAM AS YOUTH SHOWCASE THEIR PROJECTS AT A CLOSING DINNER Meet Kwasi Obeng a beneficiary of the 2023-2024 Micro-Grant. His project provided free African dance in his community. He enjoyed performing for his fellow peers during the final workshop and showcase what dance does for everyone which includes bringing out the positivity in life and joy. He expressed his gratitude in participating in the Youth Program funded by the Canada Service Corps during the final workshop and dinner on March 28, 2024 and pointed out that through the program he has been able to develop himself as a person and also his community and hopes to continue with the same enthusiasm. The Program, which funded 100 youth with $5,000 each, was facilitated by Uzima Women International and Kenyan Canadian Association. She attended the closing dinner held at Istar Banquet Hall on March 28, 2024, where she shared her experiences and successes with fellow attendees. Shelby eagerly looks forward to the next funding cycle, hopeful for the opportunity to continue her impactful work within the community.
